Balkh

Balkh PPA Project:

BDN in partnership with BRAC implements BPHS and EPHS in one of the historically known province, Balkh, located in the north of Afghanistan and bordering Tajikistan (see map). Balkh has a population of 964466 people. This province has 15 districts where BDN works in 10 of them (having a population of 648739 people). BDN takes overall responsibility of 35 health facilities about procurement of materials and drugs, placing medical staff and provision of training to them.

Balkh PPA is BDN’s current flagship project for several reasons:
1) In Balkh, BDN has been able to fill 100% of the positions reserved for female staff,
2) BDN has received incredible community contributions in terms of 2 ambulances, 5 motorcycles and land for the construction of clinics with a value of 127,563 USD over a 3-year period,
3) Based on our successful coverage of health indicators outlined in the MoPH national tool, the MoPH awarded BDN a bonus of 1% of our budget in 2005,
4) Finally, Balkh statistics places BDN at the top of the list of all Afghanistan’s provinces in terms of meeting the quality standards in BPHS implementation in 2007.

BDN has become a focal point for learning through the production of several replicable solutions it has “packaged” for implementation of the revised BPHS.

Bellow are the names of the districts where BDN implements its health program:
